The History Of Slave Labor


The underlying reasons for the turn to slave labor in early Virginia are plenteous, ranging from colonial economics to pure racism. As the necessity for cheap and permanent labor rose with the success of tobacco cultivation, Virginia planters resorted to the use of slave labor.
Early efforts by the English at colonization in the new land were not successful until the introduction of tobacco to the Virginia colony in 1613. Among the many New World commodities that fueled English interest in the colonies, tobacco caught on fast and became Virginia's economic salvation as well as it's new staple crop. servitude began to rise, planters turned their eyes toward the cheaper and indefinite service of black laborers. Although it may have not been as socially desirable, African s figured into this "problem" in that they represented skilled labor and were a proficient in tropical agriculture. With a high immunity to diseases such as malaria and yellow fever-lethal to Europeans and Indians alike, African Americans were soon seen as the best and only solution. Plantation owners were attracted not only to the affordability and permanence of slave labor, but also it's expedience. Moreover, Africans were "usually powerless to prevent enslavement or to discourage additional importation's" as were white indentured servants who often organized protests, and sent word back to England of their treatment. (Vaughan, 166) the slave trade itself, was also an important business enterprise
