Since the beginning of Belize�s existence we, as a people, have always been influenced by �outside� cultures. European culture and traditions flooded in at the start of the colony and prevailed in �British Honduras� for many decades. Slowly, but definitely surely, Western Civilization began seeping into Belize and by the time we gained independence America had its hooks rooted deep within our very society. Suddenly traditional wear and way of life was unacceptable and down right wrong. Belizeans, more specifically the younger generations, wanted clothes from The States ,or nothing else. Modern appliances ,architecture and infrastructure was adapted so as to suit our now �culturally ...

Most, if not all, of the ethnic groups in Belize abandoned their customs, traditions and blindly followed anything western.
Today the Mayas are the only ethnic group left in Belize that live almost exactly as they did fifty years ago, perhaps more. The Garifuna, also, hold strong to their culture and traditions but they do not use their traditional dress and today less and less young Garifunas are interested in inheriting all these traditions and value that their parents before them held sacred. The Creoles and the Mestizo, although there are still some customs that they hold on to, are most affected by western influence. We eat western, sleep western and think western.
