Centuries ago, white women and slaves worked to fight for their rights; moreover, they even worked together. A strong example of this is Handful and Sarah, from the novel The Invention of Wings. In the 1800’s, nearly every black was enslaved, discriminated, and abused in the U.S. Especially in Charleston, South Carolina, was the struggling story of Handful Hetty Grimké, and her friend and former owner, Sarah Grimké. They built a strong relationship and overtime, Handful and Sarah’s relationship benefited them both.

helpful effect of Handful’s lessons was the ability to write passes for her mother, Charlotte. This will help both of them because Charlotte can now go onto the streets and sew for money, to buy their freedom. This also displays what Charlotte would do for freedom. At the same time, it also helped Handful with reading and writing letters. To include, this helped communication with Sarah. Later into the book, Handful sent a letter to Sarah that they were going to attempt to escape. This later established Sarah to help them escape the South; thus, establishing the fact that Handful’s reading and writing skills really played into place.

After becoming friends, Handful and Sarah’s relationship allowed Sarah to find out who she was. In result, the relationship caused her to fight for blacks’ and women rights.
