The Joyless Street Analysis

The Joyless Street takes place in post-World War I Vienna, which is now the scene of every unscrupulous from of profiteering that was available. The movie revolves around life on a single Viennese street.
The scenes are filmed with stark realism and are often representative of the character's personality. They also reflect the economic and moral decay that plagues Vienna. The story centers on Greta, the daughter of a poor civil servant.
At one point, we see Greta waiting alone in a room for Mrs. Greifer, who runs the local bordello. The camera pans onto Greta's face as she ponders becoming a prostitute to feed her family. Her beauty is stunning, almost surreal among the moral decay ...
