of temples that were later argued over. By the 12th century, Cambodia spread into other areas including Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia. There were invasions and wars from Vietnam and Thailand until the 19th century, which new dynasties in these countries fought over control of Cambodia. A treaty was signed to stop these invasions and to allow France to rule over Cambodia, turning it, Laos, and Vietnam into French Indochina.
Various European powers have colonized Southeast Asia. Today, government and politics still are strongly influenced by western colonialism. The West began the colonization of Southeast Asia in the sixteenth century. First came the Portuguese, the Spanish and the Dutch. Next, the English and French came to Asia followed by the Americans. France governed Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos which came together to be known as Indochina.
