Character Analysis: Sylvia

Sylvia, the narrator of the story, developed a smart-aleck, tough, self-centered stance to survive in the "slums" (378) she lived in. She is a blunt and sassy little bully. In the same token, she is also an intellectual natural born leader. This essay will focus on the traits of Sylvia and the rationales for each of them. In addition, this will explain why she is such a dynamic character in this story.

Webster Dictionary defines blunt as being abrupt and often disconcertingly frank in speech. Sylvia is defiantly abrupt and frank with her speech throughout "The Lesson", for example; "we kinda hated her too, hated the way we did the winos who cluttered up or parks and pissed on our handball walls and stank up or hallways and stairs so you couldn't halfway play hide-and-seek without a goddamn gas mask" (377). Another example is "we on Fifth Avenue and everybody dressed up in stockings. One lady in a fur coat, hot as it is." "White folks crazy" (378). On page 380 Sylvia is angry at Miss Moore, "If you gonna mess up a perfectly good swim day least you could do is have some answers." On page 381 "Messin up my day with this shit." With this type of character trait the reader becomes amerced into the story because the language is captivatingly real.
