The Meaning of Evil

The Webster Dictionary defines Evil as "...having qualities tending to injury and mischief, having a nature or properties which tend to badness". It even goes so far as to quote: " A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit." It is clear, here, that the Bible's concept of humanity is slightly skewed, for it has implied that good and evil are both two separate identities that are completely counter one another.

While this definition shows definite characteristics of evil, it does not provide a thorough definition. It is very easy to characterize evil, particularly when it is contrasted with goodness.

Therefore, in extreme terms, evil can mean total selfishness, aggressive pursuit of one's desires at the expense of everyone else, and total disregard and disrespect for everyone and everything around you.

Types of Evil

There are two types of evil. Moral evil is willful evil, while physical evil is natural harm. Some examples of moral evil are murder, adultery, fornication, theft, sorcery, and abortion. Examples of physical evil are famine, illness, natural disasters and death.

Evil can be seen in any act that harms or negatively affects another person or thing. Most people believe that evil is a bad thing and avoid it all costs. Others thrive in it. Others just try to maintain a balance between good and evil.

There is an old saying that states, "No good can come out of an evil deed." It is correct. If a man commits a heinous crime, which is obviously evil, society may seek revenge by demanding the death penalty. ...
