When ratifications are made leading to the resolution of the play's problem, it is done at the cost of Shylock's suffering. From a Jew's outlook on this racist remarks-laden play, indeed, the play is much less than a romantic comedy and may find its niche as a tragedy in which the browbeaten victim of Christian loathing faces unfair persecution.

Humor expressed in The Merchant of Venice is sharp, witty and direct and at times responded with a just as witty repartee. For example, when Gratiano has lengthy conversations with Antonio in the first act, Lorenzo is prompted to say that Gratiano "never lets" him "speak". Gratiano replies curtly-
