What makes you go to war would be how patriotic u feel about your country. But there is a certain way u have to go to war you have to go to war you cannot just "sneak attack" a country ,you have to have some time of pride to make sure there is an agreement that your country and the rival country know and go to war. War in those times were all basically started over disputed territory those land were just open for the taking. By saying this ,this can back up the excuse for the Mexican War and documents to back it up.

the term Duty is applied in this instance because of where they believe this authorization to spread their vivid beliefs comes from, and you can see in O'Sullivan's words that they thought they had permission from God. Also, later in the document he says how America's future history will be to establish on Earth the moral dignity and salvation of man which establishes how many believed god was guiding them on what to do.
