Capital punishment is the intentional killing of criminals convicted of serious crimes such as murder and rape, by means of lethal injection, electrocution, hanging, firing squad or gas chamber. It is obviously the most severe form of criminal punishment. Capital punishment is a controversial way of dealing with violent criminals. The main alternative to the death penalty is life in prison. It has also been said that it relieves the anguish of the victim's family. Realistically, imposing the death penalty is expensive and time consuming. Retroactively, it has yet to be proven as a deterrent. Morally, it is a continuation of the cycle of violence and degrades all who are involved in its enforcement, as well as its victim.
Perhaps the most frequent argument for capital punishment is that of deterrence. The prevailing thought is that imposition of the death penalty will act to dissuade other criminals from committing violent acts.
