The Mission released in 1986, was directed by Roland Joffé and written by Robert Bolt. The Cast of this production includes actors such as Robert De Niro as Rodrigo Mendoza, Jeremy Irons as Father Gabriel, Aidan Quinn as Felipe Mendoza, and Ray McAnally as Cardinal Altamirano.
This movie does an exceptional job at imagery and creating beautiful scenes, but seems to lack in the ability to encapsulate the viewer into the story. The topic of this motion picture could have been conveyed much better as a documentary because of the no need for a narrative. Father Gabriel's order and the lives of the native peoples are threatened with the arrival of Cardinal Altamirano who must decide whether or not the indigenous people must abide by the orders of the Portuguese. The Spanish, who oppose the enslavement and displacement of the natives, recently ceded the land to Portugal. Altamirano's decision becomes the predominating factor to the outcome of the mission and the extreme actions which the Portuguese might take against the church. Father Gabriel and the other missionaries have to decide how to approach the situation knowing well that Mendoza might end up rebelling violently because of his past influences. Father Gabriel wants to protect the natives under the name of God.
