Throughout American history, the United States has engaged itself in almost endless political and moral conflict. This was especially true at the dawn of the 19[th] century. The Union was being torn apart by a moral and ethical issue: slavery. This issue would challenge the shape of politics at the time in the most atrocious of manners, eventually leading to the Missouri Compromise of 1820. From this agreement, the geography of the nation would be formed by political divide and compromises that would lead to division. This especially irritated northern abolitionists that not only wanted to see southern slaves working under more desirable conditions, but to see them freed and compensated for their labor. The politics deriving from this issue had Americans from all walks of life pinning themselves against each other. This problem came to the head with the question of admitting Missouri and Maine two states on opposite sides of the country.
Both Missouri and Maine had applied for admission into the Union. Both submitted their respective constitutions to Congress for approval.
