The Old Man And The Sea


Ernest Hemingway wrote . It's the story of Santiago
(The Old Man). Santiago is an old Cuban fisherman who lives off the coast
of the Gulf. Santiago goes out fishing with Manolin. Manolin is a local
kid around the city. Manolin spends more time with Santiago then his
parents. Santiago has been very unsuccessful in catching fish. It has been
85 days since Santiago has last caught a fish. He once had a streak of 87
days without catching a fish. After the 87 days, he went 3 weeks straight
of catching fish. One morning Santiago went out fishing. Manolin did not
go with him on this trip. Santiago loaded his bait, water, and food and
headed on out to the Gulf. The boy had given him two ...

the line would break because the size of the fish. He thought about
increasing the tension so it would hurt the fish and it would jump out.
But the line had been taut up to the very edge of the breaking point.
Then with his right hand he felt the difference in the pull of the line
before he saw the slant change in the water. The fish started to come up.
The line rose slowly and steadily and then the surface of the ocean bulged
ahead of the boat and the fish came out. He was bright in the sun and his
head and back were dark purple and in the sun the stripes on his sides
showed wide and a light lavender. His sword was as long as a baseball bat.
The marlin went back in the water and out of sight, but he was still
hooked to Santiago. It has now been 36 hours since Santiago last slept. He
was out of food so he captured a dolphin. Santiago gutted the dolphin,
and inside he found 2 flying fish. They were fresh and hard. The marlin
