Before telling his tale, briefly summarizes his teaching methods. He frequently quotes "Radix malorium est" (Love of money is the root of all evil) as his doctrine. He targets the so-called good sinners, saying there isn't much he can do for the sinners who are really bad. He begins by advertising a private sideline having nothing to do with his work as Pardoner. He has a collection of 'sacred relics,' bones and rags for which he claims supernatural powers, able to cure sick animals, increase wealth, and make husbands trust unfaithful wives.
