The Planet In 2050 - Online Term Paper

The Planet In 2050

Since the development of its complex culture, the human species has become amazingly effective at utilizing diverse habitats. Uniquely human is the ability, not to simply adapt to a specific environment, but to adapt an environment to fit specific needs, thus resulting in altered environments following the occurrence of human settlement. resource, and climate based issues with which todays world is faced is the rapidly growing human population. More people are added to the population each year than ever before in human history, and therefore future growth will only continue to exceed what it currently is today. The human population is currently near 6,600,000,000(U.S. Census Bureau, 2007). This means that 76,560,000 people, or 1.16 percent of the current population, are to be added in the next year. The population is now larger so the next years total will increase by an even greater amount, and long-term growth will follow in an exponential pattern. Another way to look at this is through the doubling time of a population. The Rule of 70 is a simple way to roughly estimate the time it will take something growing at a constant yearly percent to double. ...

in comparison of the second. (Malthus, 1798)

Despite the logical accuracy of Malthuss prediction, he failed to predict the extent to which increased technology would increase food production capabilities. Modern agricultural practices are much more effective at maximizing production of food. While food production has kept up with the population growth thus far, it is unknown if it will be able to support the much larger population predicted for 2050.

FOOD SECURITY
MAKING ENDS MEET

One of the most pressing issues with which the world is faced with now and that will only worsen in the future is the ability to supply the ever-growing population with an adequate amount of food. ...
