Andrew Jackson may have been our seventh president, but he was first in many ways. Jackson's presidency is noted for its redefinition of the office: the introduction of the concept that the president is one with the people and the only spokesman who could represent them; liberal use of the veto power; belief in the permanence of the Union, even to the point of military enforcement of the law; and vigorous attempts at exterminating the Native Americans.
Right from his inaugural address, Andrew Jackson showed that he was the �people�s President� by inviting everyone to the White House for a party. He wanted to eliminate the common belief that the President is superior to the average ...

He was also the first President to be elected by a National Convention as well.
Jackson believed in a strong presidency and he vetoed a dozen pieces of legislation, more than the first six presidents put together. For example, he vetoed the congressional measure providing a subsidy to the proposed Mayside road in Kentucky. He used his Presidential powers the most during the Bank war�s. He did not renew the Bank�s charter which expired in 1836. He also removed all the government�s money from the Bank of the United states and placed it in �pet banks.� During his term he strengthened the Presidency permanently.
Jackson also reestablished the supremacy of the Union over the states during the nullification crisis. The state of South Carolina was unsatisfied angry with the �tariff of abominations� and threatened to succeed if it was not removed. Vice President Calhoun offered nullification as an alternative to succession and the delegates of South Carolina agreed. Jackson ...
