(1999) directed by M. and the Night Shyamalan, Shutter Island (2010) directed by Martin Scorsese and Black Swan (2010) directed by Darren Aronofsky. These four films are the epitome of a psychological thriller as they leave the audience stunned by the mental instability of the main character.

Anthony Perkins, who plays motel clerk Norman Bates in the film Psycho, first gives the audience the impression of a very passive man that answers to the every beckoning call of his mother. He is considered to be a human "Hermit Crab" because he locks himself away from society while helping his mother manage the motel. Norman seems to be emotionally abused and at times half-swallowed words when spoken too. The mystery of Norman lies between the relationship dynamics of him and his mother.
