The Salem Witch Trials


One of the most devastating events in American history was the
Salem Witchcraft Trials. Due to a few hysterical girls' accusations and
the fear of a village, twenty people were executed and hundreds were put in
jail. Now the question still asked today is "Were the people accused
really witches possessed by the devil?" No, they were not witches nor were
they involved with the devil. In fact, the people who were at fault were
really the accusers.
The Puritan people (the people involved with the trials) had
endured many coincidental hardships and dangers, which they blamed on the
devil. This helped fuel their very religious and superstitious ways

or to damage their property. A witch they thought
was a person who believed to have received such powers from evil spirits,
such as the devil. Many people believed in witches because more than half
the people in the world assumed it was true.
People were certain that witches could harm their victims in
various ways. Such as, by giving them a magic potion which would make her
victims fall in love against they're will. Another form of witchcraft was
that "witches would make a small wax or wooden image of her victim. She
might put something from the victim's body into the image, such as
fingernail clippings or a lock of hair. She then would destroy the image
by cutting it with a knife, burning it, or sticking pins into it. The
victim supposedly would then suffer severe pain or even death"(World Book
310).
Also they thought a witch could cast a spell by reciting a magic
formula. The spell would make her victim suffer. The witch usually
