The Salem Witch Trials


The place is Salem, Massachusetts. The date is January 1692. While trade is making Salem prosperous, only the merchants are becoming rich. Trade is made easy because Salem is located next to the second largest port in the area. Tension between merchants and the local farmers start to mount as the farmers begin to lose social standing and political power to the merchants. The episode of the witch trials began in January, 1692 when nine year old Elizabeth Parris and eleven year old Abigail Williams began to exhibit strange behavior, such as blasphemous screaming, convulsive seizures, and trance-like states. to be accused. Tituba confessed to practicing witchcraft and to seeing the devil. She claimed the devil would appear to her "sometimes like a hog and sometimes like a great dog". She also testified that there was a conspiracy of witches at work in Salem. This marked the beginning of the Salem witch-hunt that would plague Salem residences for most of that year.
A pattern started to emerge which reflected the communities division within Salem village. The village was divided between supporters of the Porter and Putnam families. The people being accused of witchcraft were mostly from the eastern part of town near the harbor, referred to as Salem Town. It was on this side of town that the Porters resided.
