There are many things that could be said about the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel, �The Scarlet Letter.� The fact that Hester can see the devil in her own daughter�s eyes, and the way that Dimmesdale torments himself nightly with tools of pain. It is like an almost incurable disease that rips apart at their lives. I think that the focus of this book is, Guilt can rip apart your life.
Hester is a woman who under the pressures of guilt has started to see bad things in everyone. Hester was looking into her daughter�s eyes, looking for herself, but instead she sees the Black Man. What does this say about what she is thinking? She can�t get the fact out of her head that what she did was wrong ...

People could say that Pearl really was possessed and that she was mean, but in all seriousness why would Hester she it in her eyes. Hester wanted to see it so that�s what she saw. People could also say that Dimmesdale was really mentally insane, but he seemed all fine when the book started. This proves that he was not because mental insanity does not appear just like that.
