Charles Cullen was born in West Orange, New Jersey the youngest of the nine children, two of whom later died, of a working class family. From his childhood, Charles Cullen was surrounded by death. His dad died while driving a bus when Cullen was seven months old. Four of his eight siblings died in their childhood. When he was seventeen, his mom died in a car accident. He was a depressed child; Charles Cullen attempted to commit suicide twenty times in the course of twenty years. Charles Cullen murdered at least 45 patients between 1988 and 2003. Charles Cullen was one of those self-righteous, self-proclaimed "angels of mercy", a nurse with an eye for those who needed to die. Like a typical Angel of Death, Cullen targeted patients at hospitals at which he worked. Generally his victims were no younger than in their 60's. He killed them by poisoning their IV bags, usually with insulin, dioxin, a heart medicine, or epinephrine. Cullen said he administered overdoses to patients to spare them from being "coded" which meant going into cardiac or respiratory arrest and being listed as a Code Blue emergency. Cullen has told detectives that he could not bear to witness or hear about attempts at saving a victim's life. Cullen also claims that he gave patients overdoses so that he could end their "suffering" and prevent hospital personnel from dehumanizing them."
