The Theme of Materialism in The Great Gatsby

Every now and then I have to write down everything we discussed in order to figure out exactly what we said. Last Friday we listed several people, places, and symbols that contributed to the theme of materialism in The Great Gatsby. Here is what we came up with so far:

Materialism
- The women (Daisy Fay Buchanan, Myrtle Wilson, Jordan Baker, Ella Kaye)
� The pearls (worth $350,000) that Tom gives Daisy.
� Myrtle�s dog, dress, and things to buy (the dog collar will become an important symbol in chapter 8)
� Jordan cheats at golf (Why? So what?)
� Ella Kaye steals Gatsby�s inheritance (Think of Anna Nicole Smith)
