The Tower of London

The Tower of London has always had the same reputation for anyone living in Britain, even from its humblest beginnings. Since its construction by William the Conqueror, to its uses by former Kings of England, and even in its portrayal in Shakespeare, the English obviously recognize the Tower of London for what it really is: an embodiment of bloodshed, murder and betrayal.
The origin of the tower dates back many years to 1066 when King Edward of England also known as �The Confessor� because of his construction of Westminster Abbey, died after a reign of 23 years. He had many defenses around the city but William replaced them all with a mighty stone tower, The Tower of London, proclaiming physical power and heroism of the new monarch. Some question how such an imposing keep would enhance his prestige, but there�s no doubt that it made a clear statement. Towering above all of England, the sheer visual impact of this building reflected considerable power. This tower was built with the intention of maintaining a powerful hold on the country William had just invaded. It was supposed to keep them in line. It was, in essence, the beginnings of a relationship between ruler and partisan; a relationship based upon bloodshed and war. By building this immense structure, it served as a constant physical and psychological reminder for everyone in England of a manifestation of William�s power.
