The Uses of Laser Beam - Online Term Paper

The Uses of Laser Beam

The term laser is an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A laser beam is a powerful, narrow, monochromatic and directional beam of electromagnetic radiation. Often, these beams are within the visible spectrum of light. A laser device excites the atoms in a lasing medium. The electrons of these atoms move to a higher orbit, then release photons, creating a laser beam.

Types of lasers include gas, liquid and solid. Gas lasers excite the electrons in gases, such as helium, neon, cadmium, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Liquid lasers include the dye laser, which uses organic dye molecules in liquid form to produce a wavelength of radiation that can be tuned. ...

of industrial, medical and retail business capacities.

Lasers are frequently used to make clean, precise incisions with a control of cutting depth that often surpasses the control afforded with a scalpel. Inversely, lasers can be deployed after surgery to fuse cut skin together as an alternative to traditional stitching methods.

Lasers are also used to reattach retinas and are used in various types of cosmetic surgery such as skin resurfacing, birthmark and wrinkle reduction, and the shrinking of spider veins.

Lasers provide extremely accurate metal cutting ability in industrial applications. A beam can be easily focused on an area as tiny as 0.1 mm in diameter. The light used for cutting exerts no mechanical pressure on the piece being cut.

Laser metal cutting also has the benefit of leaving edges clean and smooth enough to warrant deburring unnecessary. Laser-cut metal pieces are frequently ready for application immediately after cutting, reducing work time and ...
