The Y2k Bug


There is a problem confronting today�s society that could change the world as we know it. It is a problem that was initially caused by a lack of technology, but recently by an act of laziness. The problem is known as the �Year 2000 Bug� (Y2K bug). It deals with how the computer programmers inputted the date codes into the computers' hardware and software. These date codes could possibly cause many computers and many items that have computer chips within them to fail at the turn of the century.
Back in the 1960�s, when computers were still in their infancy, computer programmers would input the date code by only entering a two digit number (i.e., 60) versus inputting a four digit number ...

systems to fail when the year 2000 rolled around because computers might fail to recognize that it is the year 2000 versus 1900. The problem is going to affect the whole world.
How does affect the average person? It is possible that the electric companyies� computers could crash, which could cause either blackouts or brownouts. It would mean no heat for your house and no way to store perishable items. It would mean that water companyies could not operate, so there would be no running water. It could mean that grocery stores would have to be closed because they could not do any financial transactions. It could mean that banks would be closed and people would have to live off the money that they have on hand. telephone companies may lose their power so that all the nation�s communication could be down.
This is the worst-case scenario of course; not even the experts know how this Y2K bug will truly affect the world. What they do know is that something is definitely going ...
