Once again I draw comparisons here to a male dominated society with educational and professional opportunities that are endless, vast if you will. Then I consider Gilman�s confinement within that society � and relate it to the narrator�s confinement in the converted attic nursery.

When we first learn about the wallpaper from the narrator, she describes it as �dull�pronounced enough to constantly irritate and provoke study�lame, uncertain curves�destroy themselves in unheard of contradictions�. I envision the narrator�s self-description when I read this paragraph. Her use of the words �lame and uncertain� lead me to believe that she has very little self-worth and an inferiority issue as it relates to her role as a woman in society and in her marriage.

In terms of her marriage, the narrator seems to view herself as a burden rather than a partner to her husband when she speaks of �constant irritation and provoking study� in describing the yellow wallpaper. Perhaps the ...
