There Is A Much Stronger Sense Of Tragic Closure At The Start Of The Burial At Thebes. Discuss.

Aristotle defines tragedy as �An imitation of an action that is serious, grave and of a certain magnitude�. �The Burial at Thebes� follows this typical tragedy plot. Heaney obeys Aristotle�s Poetics regarding tragedy. At the start of the play it is clear what the tragedy is going to be; we can see that the characters are setting themselves up for a fall.

The play starts in media res; in the middle of things. This creates a sense of urgency, which is reinforced throughout the first scene. This was very common in Greek theatre. It sets the audience up for a quick, hectic drama. Antigone and Ismene �enter hastily�, which makes the audience curious to their hurry.
