Born in the town of Troezen, Theseus is believed to be one of the greatest Greek heroes to have lived. Theseus was born from a woman named Aethra, a woman whom the king Aegeus, who was Theseus' real father, had slept with about nine months before. Although Theseus had no father there to guide him and help him in his early years, he grew up to be as strong and as brave as any other boy who lived at his time. Before Theseus was born, Aegeus, dreading that Aethra was to bear child from the night they had spent together, warned her to tell nobody about their relationship and then went into the woods to place sandals and a sword under a rock so that when Theseus was able to lift the ...

man, and at the age of sixteen, he lifted the stone which Aegeus had placed the sandals and sword under and began his journey to meet his true father. On his way, he was confronted by six different villains and monsters, but he easily defeated them all, which was a way to prove that he was a worthy heir of the throne. Once at his father's house, he was almost murdered by Aegeus' new wife, but Aegeus recognized the sandals and intervened. Once Theseus' identity was announced, all of Athens cheered at the thought of a strong, healthy, and just man as their next ruler, all except for Aegeus' brothers and their nephews who failed an attempt to kill Theseus.
