Things Fall Apart: Okonkwo's Life



Throughout his book Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe uses certain incidents and emotions that capture the spirit of the Ibo people. He shows us what it must be like to live in such a world and then face such gigantic opponents and low odds. The story tells of Okonkwo, a strong man whose life is dominated by the fear of showing a "weakness", or emotion. Achebe uses Okonkwo's life to tell the sad tale of the slow, painful demise of the Ibo heritage. In itself, Okonkwo's life is priceless; it was worthy of more praise than any man would give, and generally speaking, certainly worth more than one degrading chapter in a biased book.

Unoka was not.
Unoka was a peace loving man, who hated the sight of blood. Unoka never stood for any unnecessary killing, and was reputed for being "weak with his machete" (18). He would rather wield away his time playing on the flute than watch a battle or wrestling match. Because of this, Okonkwo loved to fight. He had a quick temper and was always ready to pounce on anyone at the slightest hint of an insult. By the time he was a teenager, "Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond" (1) as the best wrestler ever to fight. Okonkwo had done battle in many wars and had already won his fifth human head.
Unoka was an idle man, who would sit for hours playing music, while the other men were working at their farms. When the planting season came and "others were crossing seven rivers to make their farms, Unoka was offering sacrifices to a reluctant soil" (17). Unoka's plow was in a broken state of disuse, and so his yams turned up rotten or fruitless each ...
