Previously classified as a sub-field of bio materials, Tissue Engineering is rapidly taking shape in today�s fast pasted and more restrictive biological engineering field. NUI Galway (2007) defines Tissue Engineering is a multidisciplinary approach to a serious problem in modern medicine; the availability of organs and tissues for transplant. Simply put, Tissue Engineering is the repair or replacement of portions or whole tissues, properly restoring the mechanical and structural functioning of the tissues. Examples would be bone, cartilage, blood vessels, bladder, skin, etc.

Some main of the uses have been replacement of skin from severe burns, or chronic ulcers; repair of defective or damaged bones, cartilage, connective tissue, or intervertebral discs. Other equally promising applications include replacement of worn and poorly functioning tissues such as aged muscles or corneas; replacement of damaged blood vessels, and restoration of cells that produce critical enzymes, hormones, and other metabolites.

Another major goal of Tissue Engineering is the production of organs and tissues that can be used for critical research purposes. This research includes testing of new drugs and stimulating disease on the organ and tissue to better understand and develop treatments for the diseases.
