To Err And To Be Careful


With the age old question discussing the existence of god Descartes
begins the Fourth Meditation in clear defense of his existence. Descartes
proves the existence of God through the mere fact that he, the author, has
an idea within him of the existence of a higher power that this power must
indeed exist. Of course, reading the previous mediataions the reader
learns that this theory rests on the fact that the author has separated his
thoughts from his senses: " And from the mere fact that there is such an
idea within me....I clearly infer that God also exists." However Descartes
shuns the typical philosophical arguments behind the existence of an
omnipotent, all- loving god who allows evil ...

the author error results from either one of two causes; one may err simply
because he/she has ignorance of the topic or one may err because of their
own carelessness. When dealing with ignorance Descartes suggests that this
type of error occurs when the will oversteps the intellect. In
clarification he explains that while the will is infinite the intellect on
the other hand is finite and thus when the individual errs he/she allows
the infinite will to overstep the finite intellect; "... the scope of the
will is wider than that of the intellect..." Because the individual is not
omniscient but still chooses to dabble in those fields he/she knows little
about the individual is led astray and errs. On the other hand, many
mistakes occur when the individual is simply careless and neglects to pay
attention to the surroundings.To evade error, Descartes informs the reader
