To Kill A Mockingbird: Atticus



Harper Lee�s To Kill a Mockingbird is a story set in the 1930�s set in Maycomb, Alabama about a white man, Atticus Finch, who defends a falsely accused black man. Atticus has two young children, Scout and Jem, Scout being the youngest. In this story Atticus is characterized as a good parent, he proves this in many ways.
The first example that shows Atticus�s parenting skills is when he allows Scout to wear overalls despite Aunt Alexandria�s suggestions to encourage her to wear dresses to become more "lady like". By taking this approach to the problem, it shows that Atticus took the time to assess the problem before taking any action. If she didn�t understand what it meant then there is no point in punishing her. More times than not, children hear someone older say things and they just mimic it and assume its all right to say it. Many times, to my experience, this has happened when I am dealing with younger children. If you just ignore them they will eventually stop.
The best example of good parenting came from the trial. Although Atticus is not aware the children have been watching the trial, when he finds out, he realizes the importance the outcome of trial will have in their lives so they might as well hear it.
