Totem

In the short story �Totem� by Thomas King, a totem pole causes substantial trouble for the employees at the Southwest Alberta Art Gallery and Prairie Museum. The author is here combining his choice of theme; �let it be�, and the matter of the natives, to teach us that if we let things be and start concentrating at other things, it will not bother us as much.

The setting of the story is the museum. The appearance of the museum is not thoroughly described, so we must jump to the conclusion that it is what you may call an �ordinary� museum with the usual surroundings, like paintings, shows and so on. The majority of the plot takes place in the �Seaviews�-show part of the museum.

The fact that the totems are distinctly different ( ��..Doesn�t sound a thing like the other one.��(page 16)), can symbolize the different tribes of the First Nations, while people are not aware of their differences, since they are just mentioned by the general term �Indians� rather than by tribe. Likewise, the Totems are also just mentioned by �the Totem�. The fact that the Totem pole is not given any human qualities shows us that the First Nations are not really considered as humans.
