Frank O'Connor shows us a side of the World War I that is hardly ever seen. There are many works about the soldiers in the field missing the ones at home. However, there are few works about those left behind. Those that are written concentrate on a grieving mother, waiting for her love to come home. This story gives us an interesting perspective of the world of the child left behind at an age when fatherly support is so important. Children at that age learn many of their behaviors from modeling adults.
