Various Ideals Within Antebellum Reform

As the Jacksonian Era was coming to an end, various reform movements that dealt with religion, temperance, abolition, and women�s rights took place. Although some might think that these reforms movements limited democracy as a whole, the religious, educational, and feminist reforms movements in Antebellum America sought to expand democratic ideals. Many of these social and religious movements occurred between the years of 1825 to 1850, aiming for better laws, institutions, and to spread democracy overall.

as suffrage for minorities (DOC C). Susan B. Anthony, a Quaker, opposed the immorality that slavery withheld and played a role in the Women�s Movement. An inspiration to Anthony was Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a woman active in both movements, who had played a big part in The Seneca Falls Convention of 1848 (DOC I), which had a great role in democratic ideals producing a declaration for equality of all men and women. The education reform movement was one that sought to expand democratic ideals in the sense that more educated people would be able to be more productive in a society, thus leading to more powerful economy and government, so the common man began to demand an education (DOC E). At the same time religious reform got great help as the educational system sought concepts of religion onto its students.

Religious revivals such as the Second Great Awakening greatly expanded the democratic ideals by the installation of better standards of morality in the common man. At this time ...
