I think it is obvious that music has an effect on today�s society. It has been stated that �musical messages are capable of planting dangerous ideas in the minds of young people or fueling those which already exist.� Violence in music is more common than ever. Three decades ago not one popular song encouraged robbery, rape, murder, assaults, or using weapons to settle disputes. Violent crimes increased by over 500 percent during the three decades ending in 1990. In today�s music nothing is taboo. �EM! COP KILLER, but tonight we get even. I think just from those few lines you can understand why it was necessary to remove this album from stores. The first amendment right to free speech is crucial but you have to think of the safety of others when doing something like this and that is why the first amendment rights of this band were not damaged.
Another big problem with today�s music is that it seems to be common now to demean women. Kids seem to be learning that demeaning women is not only acceptable, but preferable to treating women with respect. Television also seems to play a role in demeaning women. Movies depict rape, brutality and many other violent acts that demean women. Women should be given the same treatment as men no matter what the case may be. If society as a whole would realize that women are just as equal as men I can assure that we would all get along 10 times better.
