Visual Arts Essay on Xu Bing, Cai Quo-Qiang & Wenda Gu

Contemporary Chinese artists Xu Bing, Cai Quo-Qiang and Wenda Gu have integrated the audience into their installation artworks. The audience can be defined as museum patrons, volunteers working on the project, translators and the wider public as seen in the artwork installation by these three Chinese artists.

Xu Bing created square word calligraphy (1994-1996), where a classroom installation was created in the gallery for museum patrons to participate in. Cai Quo-Qiang created Chaos in Nature (2012) which was an eight panel giant unseen work using gun powder with a team of volunteers. His big team of 30 helpers are all volunteers and are part of the audience of this artwork. Before igniting it some museum patrons come in to watch the artwork who are part of the audience as well.

The artwork is created in the following process. A group of 30 volunteers come into help lay out the panels for the gun powder to be put on. Some volunteers help cut out stencils to be lifted up and onto the main panel to make sure the gun powder forms a certain shape. A group of museum patrons come in to view the ignition of the artwork and when the gun powder has been all used, some volunteers come out to help put out some small spot fires. The pattern the gun powder leaves behind is that of destruction hence the name, Chaos of Nature.
