I chose to volunteer for a school for mentally and physically handicapped children that is funded by the school district, located in Concord named The Spectrum Center. One of the main reasons I chose to do this, is that I have an adopted sister who is mentally as well as physically handicapped. My family adopted Lori when I was in the eighth grade, and my first thought was that I did not want to even be around someone like her. This can be blamed on my own ignorance and insecurities at the time. Lori is two years older than I am, but mentally she has peaked at a twelve year old level. the more patience and compassion I had for her and people like her. During my Junior and Senior years of school I took a class (with much prodding from Lori) which involved going into the special education classroom and helping these kids. Not only did I help teach book lessons but also how to react and interact with other people. To tell the truth these kids taught me more about myself and the people around me more than anyone else ever could. Now that I have given a brief history of why I chose The Spectrum Center I will now tell what the Spectrum Center does.
My job basically is to just be a friend to these kids, and let them know that there are people in this world that think they are more than just a retard. I talk with the kids about any topic under the sun, draw pictures, shoot hoops, just generally hang with them. The manners that are taught are not the normal chew with your mouth closed type, but more basic like knocking on a door before entering. Basic manners such as these will also help the children when in a different environment away from the school by giving a good impression to other people. I may have been redundant in saying how these kids need certain skills in order to co-exist with other so-called �normal� people. The fact of the matter is, it is necessary to try to mold these children into a society that they know nothing about.
