The ideals that the U.S. stands for such as freedom and democracy are not the ones it was supporting in South Vietnam. The government was not fully unified and the people in it did not support their government. It was backing the southern leader Diem. Diem was known as a very religious Christian. He would discriminate his citizens based on their religion. During the time there was a proverb that said �Turn Christian and have rice to eat�.(2) Many who weren�t Christian did not get food and starved under this so-called �democracy� that the US was supporting. How could the U.S. support a leader that would favor his religion enough to let his own people starve. In response to the religious persecution some Buddhist monks performed religious suicide.
