White Oleander Book Analysis

The novel "White Oleander" is written by Janet Fitch in 1999.

The book tells the story of 12-year old Astrid Magnussen who lives in Los Angeles with her mother Ingrid. After her mother goes to prison, Astrid has to spend the next six years in different foster homes.

I think that one of the main themes in this book is guilt. Astrid feels like she is pulling her mother back all the time. She deifies her, she thinks that her place is not in America, that she doesn't live the life she deserves, that she doesn't work what she is supposed to and all of it is Astrid's fault. She thinks that Ingrid would live a different, a better life if it wasn't for Astrid. She says she feels her "guilt ...

The next main theme in my opinion is fear. In the beginning of the book Astrid is always afraid that her mother will leave her. When Ingrid goes out, Astrid stays up and waits for her to come back. She can't fall asleep before she hears her mother's key in the lock. She has never told Ingrid that she wished she had a dad because she is afraid that she would fly away and Astrid would have to go to a foster home. When Ingrid goes to prison, Astrid doesn't want to visit her at first because she is scared that her mother blames her for not being able to prevent it, for not doing anything to help her to go out of the prison. When Astrid moves in with the Richards family she hides the letters from her mother to Claire because she is scared that she will lose Claire.
