Willy Loman�s Struggle With The American Dream



Does the American Dream set some people up for failure? The play,
Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, displays aspects of the
American Dream. Willy Loman, the main character in the play, is a salesman
who lives the life of a failure. He is a common man who has a common family.
Linda, is Willy�s wife, she tries very hard to keep things under control in
the Loman household. Biff and Happy are the sons of Willy. Willy
concentrates the bulk of his attention towards Biff. Willy�s life displays
how a common man is affected by the American Dream. Some men succeed with
the dream while others fail. Willy is a perfect model of the common man.

and discovering happiness in each of those categories. Those components of
the American Dream were not found in Willy Loman�s life. Willy�s life
lacked happiness. The only time Willy remembered happiness in his life was
when his boys were young, even then he was not completely happy. �Remember
those two beautiful elm trees out there? When I and Biff hung the swing
between them?�(Miller 17) Willy was always reminiscing about the past in
his flashbacks. His flashbacks proved his unhappiness. Willy had flashbacks
about his affair with another woman. �Whyn�t you have another drink, honey,
and stop being so damn self-centered?...I�m so lonely.�(Miller 116) Willy�s
affair proved that he was not satisfied in life and that he felt lonely.
Linda was always loyal to Willy and she was a major support to him. Linda
knew that Willy wasn�t making the money he described he was making. She
knew about his suicidal notions and she also knew about the disappointed he

personality always wins the day.�(Miller 65) Biff failed to make it in the
business world. Willy took Biff�s failure in the business world as if Biff
was a failure to him. This could have been a possible motive for Willy to
commit suicide. If Biff could make anything of himself, and Willy never did
make anything of himself, Willy had nothing to live for. Willy believed
that the life insurance money from his death would help the family
financially in the long run. A part of Willy�s unhappiness came from the
