Fear is in fact the natural state of civilized people. No one and nothing is born civilized. Civility is a learned behavior that is taught. Riding a bicycle is learned and it is an aspect of civility which is different than breathing and blinking, which is natural and instinctive. Instinctive actions and thoughts are always inside your mind so that you react instead of contemplating and regretting anything. Fear is instinctive, fear is natural, and fear is the natural state of mind in everybody.

Instruction is the base for civilized people, but fear is the base for instruction. In �Lord of the Flies�, by William Golding, Ralph, the protagonist, shows the reader that civilization is ruled by the fear in the people�s natural state of mind. Therefore, Ralph creates instructions to combat the consequences the alien fears (in comparison to the character�s otherworldly fears in England) around them on the uninhabited island.
