Woman in The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby takes place in the roaring twenties which was a decade where women were becoming more independent, sexual, and started changing the traditional role of a woman. In the book The Great Gatsby there are three major female characters Daisy Buchanan who is the “it girl” and whom everyone admires, Jordan Baker is the “independent woman” who is androgynous, Myrtle is the “Gold Digger” with a thirst for materialism but then again Daisy also quenches that same thirst. All three ladies have different characteristics although they all share the similar trait of being manipulative.

but not telling Tom her feelings for Gatsby. "She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw. He was astounded. His mouth opened a little, and he looked at Gatsby, and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as someone he knew from long ago" (Fitzgerald 119). Myrtle used manipulation in order to get what she wants, she would speak her mind and usually ends up winning an argument. Daisy and Myrtle both think that men are above woman. Daisy is dependent on men and thinks women should just be beautiful fools “that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool” (Fitzgerald 17), unlike Myrtle who uses men. “I'm going to make a list of all the things I've got to get” (Fitzgerald 36).

Jordan Baker is a self-sufficient woman who was not like all the other woman in the nineteen twenties. Unlike, Myrtle, and Daisy, Jordan does not need a man she is an independent and strong woman who fights to prove that she is more than just a ...
