The word symbol derives from the Greek verb symbolallein 'to throw together' and its noun symbolon 'mark, emblem, token or sign'. A symbol is an object animate or inanimate, which represents or stands for something else.

Hawthorne uses symbolism and imagery throughout the story. Browns journey entails leaving light for darkness, civilization for wilderness and Faith for devilry. The very use of the name Faith for Brown's wife has a strong symbolic meaning, Hawthorne offers an ambiguous illustration of faith to counteract the vividness of the devil's presence.
