Wuthering Heights: Dark And Evil Themes



Wuthering Heights, written in Gothic style by Emily Bronte, has a somber tone, dark and evil themes. One of the major themes is tyranny. Tyranny, meaning oppressive power, which it contributes to Gothic style. Tyranny is uniquely used because all of the oppressors are aware of its use and yet while they are capable of hurting some characters, they also show love towards others. Tyranny, normally thought of as an obsession with powers, is used in Wuthering Heights as a weapon to hurt specific characters.
The two characters who maliciously oppress others are Hindley Earnshaw and Heathcliff. As soon as Hindley�s father, Mr. Earnshaw adopts Heathcliff, Hindley is jealous of the love ...

Hindley is also envious of the love that Catherine has for Heathcliff, and he tries to force them to live apart from each other, but Heathcliff and Catherine:

�� they forgot everything the minute they were together again � at least the minute they had contrived some naughty plan of revenge�� (50).

Even so, Hindley�s abuse is almost solely directly towards Heathcliff. The only time Hindley abuses anyone else is when he is drunk.
Unlike Hindley, whose reason for his abusive power is his hatred for Heathcliff, Heathcliff�s abuse is directed at avenging past results. Through gambling, Heathcliff is able to acquire all of Hindley�s properties but instead of abusing Hindley, Heathcliff waits for Hindley to die as a drunk person and then uses his power to degrade Hareton Earnshaw, Hindley�s son, the same way that Hindley degraded him earlier. Nelly Dean, the servant who has been housekeeper both at Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange says,
