Abraham Lincoln


was born on February 12,1809, in Hardin County,
Kentucky. He grew up with his older sister, Sarah. His father, Thomas, had
died. He was a very skilled carpen-ter, but little was known about his
mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln.
Lincoln's life near Little Pigeon Creek was not easy for him and his
family. Abraham was raised to work on a farm. Out there, he said, there
was nothing that would actually educate him. He attended some schools
(less than a year al-together). He learned how to read, write, and code,
but that was all.

Later on, in 1818, his mother passed away and the follow-ing year his
father married a Kentucky widow, Sarah Widow, who in Abraham's words "was

Lincoln was born in 1843 and died in 1926.
Edward Baker Lincoln lived from 1846-1850, William Wallace Lincoln lived
from 1850-1862, and finally, Thomas Tad Lincoln lived from 1853-1871.

In February 1860, Lincoln made his first major political appearance in
the Northeast, when he addressed a rally at Cooper Union in New York. He
was now well-known to be a presidential candidate. At the Republican
National Conven-tion, in Chicago, Lincoln won the nomination and went on
to win the presidential election.

Lincoln's victory in that election changed the future of the United
States. It also agitated John Wilkes Booth to be-gin first to abduct
Lincoln, and then to kill him. On April 14,1865, Lincoln went to attend a
movie, Our American Cousin, at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. There
Booth entered the presidential box and shot Abraham, who sadly died the
next morning at 7:22.
