Over time, population trends have indicated that there is a changing demographic trends in the aging population, triggered by the socio-economic changes in the American society as the 21st century emerged. Statistics show that population of old Americans over a century (from 1900-2000) has increased substantially, where Americans aged 65 or older make up a total of 4% of the total population in the United States. Papalia (2002) cites some factors significant to this increase in the aging population: high birthrates, high immigration rates, and longer life due to medical progress (technological development), and increase in life expectancy.

Active participation in the workforce also brings about development not only in the mental and emotional health of the elderly, but also in their physical strength as well.
