The idea of computing has been in people�s minds throughout history. Today we have a different idea of computers, but a computer is any complex counting machine. The first computer ever used by a person could have been a simple set of stones that he used to represent a set or group of something. These stones were used to perform calculations. This is the same thing a computer does. Today�s computers work by performing calculations.
Today�s computer did not just come into being, it went through many years of improvements. When talking about the history of computers and how they evolved, we classify them into different generations. In every generation the computer was greatly improved on. ...

In 1953 IBM realized that a market existed for business computers. They introduced a total of 19 of these computers for businesses. The computers were very large, expensive, and needed a large staff of professional people just to run them. Punch cards were used to give the first generation computer data and instructions.
The second generation of computers existed from 1959-1963. The second generation of computers did not run on vacuum tubes but instead they used transistors. Unlike vacuum tubes, transistors were small, required little power, and stayed cool. Over all transistors made the second generation much more reliable, faster, and smaller.
