Analysis of Angie Estes’ "The Uses of Passion"

The Misuse of Passion

Angie Estes' poem on "The Uses of Passion" proposes to deal with the way in which passion affects the human experience. Each line or two describes the way in which passion will change one's life, as in the third line which claims "It tells you what to wear." (Estes) The thesis of this poem appears to be that passion lends meaning to life, but this is presented in the most mundane fashion imaginable so that one is actually led to suspect that passion actually saps the mind of it independent creativity while creating an illusion of meaning and purpose.

A similar mundane effect is achieved with the use of cliches, such as "why the chicken crossed the road" (Estes), and disguised cliches, such as "It has 20/600 vision" (Estes) in place of a simple "love is blind." By changing cliches slightly but keeping the sentiment the same, Estes manages to create an illusion of cleverness while actually just retracing heavily trodden ground. This illustrates the way in which passion makes a person feel special and unique and more alive than they were before, but actually just turns (many) individuals into pretension posers with less independence and creativity than before. It has been suggest that everyone who falls in love becomes a poet, and one guesses that this poem would agree, but it might well be added that not everyone who falls in love becomes a good poet -- as this poem illustrates!
