This essay will focus on the importance of behavior modification. Behavior modification is a formalized technique for promoting the frequency of desirable behaviors and decreasing the incidence of unwanted ones (Feldman 2010). A behavior that is unwanted and unacceptable is important to change. During the housebreaking of a young puppy, the owners noticed the puppy would then eat her own feces. This behavior was not only disgusting to the owners but it also caused the puppy to have the feces on the fur of its mouth and feet. Reinforcement can also be used; negative reinforcement can be implemented by taking the poop out of the area immediately and disposing of it. Positive reinforcement can be used by calling the puppy away from the poop and praising and rewarding her with a treat when she leaves the area and the feces alone.
Punishment is a stimulus that will decrease the likelihood that the behavior will happen again (Feldman 2010). Positive punishment would be the spanking of the puppy. Punishment is most effective when it is consistent and done immediately after the offense has occurred (Feldman 2010). Punishment can be effective in some cases but it could also have negative results.
